DIOCESE OF KOTTAYAM

History
Pope Leo XIII created the Vicariates of Kottayam and Thrissur in 1887 for the Catholics of Malabar separating them from the Archdiocese of Kodungallur and Verapoly. Again in 1896 three Vicariates of Thrissur, Ernakulam and Changanassery were created. Later in 1911, the Vicariate of Kottayam was restored exclusively for the section of Syro Malabar Christians who are known as Suddhisits, i.e. descendants of the Colony of Emigrants in the year 345 A.D. under the leadership of Thomas the Kinai from Edessa, Syria. The Vicariate comprises all the churches and chapels belonging to the Suddhist community of Kerala. On December 21, 1923 the Vicariate of Kottayam was elevated to the status of a Diocese. The headquarters of the Diocese is at Kottayam. Patrons of the Diocese are Sacred Heart of Jesus and St.Pius X.
